Frequently asked questions about mountain roads

When is the Transfăgărășan open?

The alpine section (DN7C) usually opens around 1 July and closes towards late October / early November, depending on snow. CNAIR announces the exact dates — we only show an indicative estimate.

When is the Transalpina open?

The Transalpina (DN67C), Romania's highest road, is roughly open from June to October. The Urdele Pass (2145 m) closes in winter. Check the official source before you travel.

How do I know for sure if a road is open right now?

From the road administrator (CNAIR / Info Trafic) and the traffic police. Our estimate combines the usual seasonal window with the weather at the pass — useful for planning, but it doesn't replace the official source.

Do I need special equipment on mountain roads?

In summer, a normal car is fine on the paved roads. In winter and the shoulder season you may need winter tyres or chains, and some sections are closed. Check the weather and road status first.
