Mountain essentials
Which are the best-known mountain regions in Romania?
The Prahova Valley and Bucegi, Brașov and Poiana Brașov, the Făgăraș Mountains (with the Transfăgărășan road), Piatra Craiului, Retezat, Parâng–Rânca (Transalpina), Apuseni, Ceahlău, Rodnei and Bukovina with Rarău. Each has both winter slopes and hiking trails.
When is the best time to go to the mountains in Romania?
For skiing, roughly December–March, depending on snow. For high-altitude hiking, June–September, when the trails are snow-free. The alpine roads (Transfăgărășan, Transalpina) are typically open in summer–autumn.
Which hiking trails are good for beginners?
Many regions have short, marked, easy trails (e.g. the Bucegi plateau with the cable car to the top, or low trails in Piatra Craiului and Apuseni). Check the difficulty, duration and markings of each trail before setting off.
When do the Transfăgărășan and Transalpina open?
The alpine sections usually open in summer: the Transfăgărășan roughly from July, the Transalpina from June, until around October — depending on snow. Always check the official source (CNAIR) before you travel; we only show an estimate.
What gear do I need for mountain hiking?
Grippy hiking boots, layered clothing, a rain shell, water, an offline map/app and a torch. At altitude the weather changes fast — check the forecast and tell someone your route.
Can I see weather and snow by region?
Yes. On the Weather page we show temperature, wind and snow depth for each mountain region, from Open-Meteo (free, no invented data), updated about every 30 minutes.
How do I read a trail's difficulty?
We use easy / moderate / hard / expert, alongside duration, distance and elevation gain. An “expert” trail assumes experience, navigation and sometimes exposed sections — don't pick it as your first outing.
What do the trail markings mean?
Romanian hiking markings are coloured symbols (stripe, cross, triangle, dot) on rocks and trees. We note each trail's marking, but it can fade over time — also carry a map or offline app.
Are ridge trails safe?
Ridges (for example the Făgăraș ridge or Piatra Craiului) require experience, good weather and proper gear. Afternoon storms and fog are dangerous at altitude. Start early and turn back if the weather worsens.
Is the trail data accurate?
It's indicative and editorially verified, not invented. Actual duration depends on your pace, the weather and conditions. Where we aren't certain, we flag it “to be checked”.
When is the Transfăgărășan open?
The alpine section (DN7C) usually opens around 1 July and closes towards late October / early November, depending on snow. CNAIR announces the exact dates — we only show an indicative estimate.
When is the Transalpina open?
The Transalpina (DN67C), Romania's highest road, is roughly open from June to October. The Urdele Pass (2145 m) closes in winter. Check the official source before you travel.
How do I know for sure if a road is open right now?
From the road administrator (CNAIR / Info Trafic) and the traffic police. Our estimate combines the usual seasonal window with the weather at the pass — useful for planning, but it doesn't replace the official source.
Do I need special equipment on mountain roads?
In summer, a normal car is fine on the paved roads. In winter and the shoulder season you may need winter tyres or chains, and some sections are closed. Check the weather and road status first.
