Munții Făgăraș & Transfăgărășan

The Făgăraș are the roof of Romania — a ridge of almost eighty kilometres of sharp peaks, glacial lakes and dizzying saddles, crowned by Moldoveanu Peak, the country's highest point. Through the heart of these "Transylvanian Alps" winds the Transfăgărășan, the legendary road that climbs in tight switchbacks to the lake beneath the crest.

Why it's worth it Nowhere in the Carpathians is alpine terrain more concentrated: granite walls, glacial cirques and a ridgeline that stands up to the clouds. Here are the nation's great summits — Moldoveanu and Negoiu — and its most photographed high lakes, Bâlea and Capra. It is a stern, grand landscape built for endurance, not for a stroll.

When to go The short summer (roughly July–September) is the only realistic window for the ridge and for the Transfăgărășan, whose alpine section (DN7C) usually opens only in the warm months; check conditions on the roads page. In winter the slopes are avalanche country — for the experienced only. In any season, check the forecast and note Salvamont; the weather here is unforgiving.

What to do The great objective is the Făgăraș ridge traverse, a multi-day crossing from refuge to refuge. For shorter outings, climb from Bâlea to Capra, tackle Negoiu via Strunga Dracului, or reach Moldoveanu from Podragu cabana. On the northern flank, Bâlea Waterfall is worth the stop. Getting there, where to stay The most spectacular access is the Transfăgărășan itself, from Curtea de Argeș or Sibiu; see the map too. The high cabanas — Podragu, Negoiu, Bâlea Lac — are the classic ridge bases. For comfort, choose foothill guesthouses, resort lodging and meals at restaurants in the Sibiu or Argeș region.

Practical note: on the ridge the distances between water sources and refuges are long — plan your stages, pack windproof gear, and set out at first light.
