Cabana Podragu – Vârful Moldoveanu

Expert5 h

The climb from Cabana Podragu to Moldoveanu Peak (2544 m) is the classic route to Romania's highest summit, in the heart of the Făgăraș Mountains. It is an expert-level outing, long and demanding, over severe alpine terrain, via the Orzănelei saddle and the main ridge. The reward is the roof of the country — but the cost is a full day of effort at altitude, exposed to the weather.

The estimates are orientative: count on 5 hours or more one way and roughly +1100 m of cumulative gain, depending on pace and weather. There are no reliable water sources on the ridge; the last dependable refill is usually around the hut. Treat all figures as guidance.

On the trail

You start at Cabana Podragu and climb on the waymark toward the main ridge, then on the red stripe / red triangle toward the summit. Check the exact marking on each segment locally.

  1. Start (Cabana Podragu). Climb from the hut and Lake Podragu toward the main ridge, on a rocky path with a sustained gradient.
  2. On the main ridge. Pick up the red stripe and follow the crest, with ups and downs along the ridge, real exposure and a vast panorama.
  3. Orzănelei saddle. A key point on the route, the saddle from which you tackle the final segment to the summit. From here the climb becomes sustained again over rocky ground.
  4. Toward Moldoveanu. The last section climbs along the ridge to the summit, over severe alpine terrain; a few passages demand attention and sure footing.
  5. Moldoveanu Peak (2544 m). Romania's highest point, with a 360° panorama over the entire Făgăraș ridge. See Moldoveanu Peak.

The descent is usually back along the same route to Podragu — time it so you get down in daylight.

Gear and difficulty

Difficulty is expert, due to altitude, length and alpine terrain.

  • Stiff boots with excellent grip on rock and scree.
  • Helmet recommended on the rocky passages (rockfall).
  • All the water for the day (3 l+) — there are no reliable sources on the ridge.
  • Warm layer, hard shell, gloves, hat, headlamp, map/GPS, first aid.
  • A head for heights and good fitness.

See the gear guide and the Făgăraș ridge traverse.

Safety

A high-altitude outing, where weather and fatigue are the main risks.

  • Exposure — the ridge has narrow crests and rocky passages; a slip can be serious. Do not commit on wet rock.
  • Weather and lightning — on the roof of the country you are extremely exposed to afternoon storms. Set off early and descend in good time. Check the weather.
  • Fog — on the ridge, low visibility leads easily to disorientation; follow the waymarks carefully.
  • Distance and fatigue — the route is long; mistakes happen on the return, when tired.
  • Residual snow — early/late in the season, hard snow tongues may linger on the slopes.

When to turn back: if the weather breaks, you fall behind schedule, or you feel exhausted, retreat toward Podragu while you are still safe. Do not set off alone without ridge experience; read the safety and weather guide.
