Bucovina: Vatra Dornei, Rarău–Giumalău

Bucovina is the northern edge of the Eastern Carpathians, a land where spruce forests reach right down into the village yards and the road climbs gently from Vatra Dornei toward the crests of Rarău and Giumalău. It has the air of another era: old chairlifts, stone cabanas, mineral springs welling straight out of the ground, and a stillness few Romanian ranges still keep.

What it is and why it's worth it Two landmarks anchor the area: Rarău–Giumalău, with the limestone cliffs of the Pietrele Doamnei, and Vatra Dornei, a high-altitude resort known for its springs. From up by Cabana Rarău, the view opens over an ocean of forested ridges — a landscape that has stayed, unlike other massifs, gentle and little-walked. Access to the plateau is eased by Transrarău, the panoramic road linking Câmpulung Moldovenesc to Chiril.

When to go Summer (June–September) is ideal for ridge hikes and for exploring Pietrele Doamnei, a spectacular yet accessible rocky terrain. In winter, the Vatra Dornei ski area and reliable snow turn the region into a quiet destination for skiing and sledding. Weather above 1500 m changes fast — check the mountain forecast and note the Salvamont contacts before setting out.

What to do The star route is the climb to Pietrele Doamnei, the limestone towers below Rarău peak; other variants head up to Giumalău, the highest crest in the area. Getting there, where to stay E13/E58 and the railway bring travellers up to Vatra Dornei and Câmpulung; for the plateau, Transrarău is the way up — check its condition on the roads page and on the map. Lodging ranges from village guesthouses to resort hotels, and meals at restaurants serving Bucovina cuisine. From here both Ceahlău and Maramureș with the Rodnei Mountains are within easy reach.

Practical note: in winter, Transrarău may be closed or hard to drive — confirm access before heading up and start early on the ridge.
