Vatra Dornei

Vatra Dornei is where Bukovina shows its belle-époque face: Austrian buildings with turrets, a monumental casino the town is slowly bringing back to life, a park with mineral springs, and mofettes used for generations in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions. The town sits where the Dorna meets the Bistrița, ringed by gentle mountains, and works equally well as a cure destination and as a base.

In winter it has its own ski area, with a piste right above the centre. The rest of the year the road climbs towards Rarău and Pietrele Doamnei along the panoramic Transrarău, and the painted monasteries fit comfortably into a day.

Good to know People come year-round, but autumn is the best season: clear air, coloured forests and a resort emptied of crowds. Compare it with the other thermal and spa resorts in the Carpathians, and book stays early in the ski season. The rest of the region — Bukovina: Vatra Dornei, Rarău–Giumalău.
