Parâng, Rânca & Transalpina
Romania's highest road, over the Parâng
Parâng is one of the wildest massifs in the Southern Carpathians: long ridges above 2,500 m, glacial lakes and plateaus where you won't meet a soul for hours. At its foot, the Rânca resort grew quickly into a holiday base, and above it all winds the Transalpina — the most spectacular alpine road in Romania. This is a region for those who want altitude, open spaces and a less touristy rhythm than the Bucegi.
Why it's worth it The Transalpina (DN67C) is the highest road in Romania, its high point at the Urdele pass sitting above 2,100 m (approximate). It comes bundled with rare ridge views and easy access to trails that are otherwise hard to reach. Parâng offers serious hiking and genuine quiet, while Rânca provides the comfort of a resort.
When to go The Transalpina closes in winter along its high section; summer and early autumn (roughly June–October) are the golden window for the drive and the trails — always confirm the state of the roads and the forecast. In winter, Rânca operates as a ski area, with options too on the Transalpina–Vidra plateau.
What to do Drive the Transalpina end to end, stopping at the viewpoints and lakes. For the summit, climb from the resort towards Parângu Mare Peak on the Rânca–Parângu Mare trail, one of the finest ridges in the country. Explore the rest of the trails and attractions, plus ideas for experiences and itineraries; those after more adrenaline can link the area to the Transfăgărășan.
Getting there Rânca is reached from Novaci (DN67C) in about 40 minutes of climbing (approximate); from the north, the Transalpina descends from Sebeș. It's a drive worth taking in itself, among the most admired mountain roads.
Where to sleep & eat Rânca is full of guesthouses and apartments; see accommodation and the restaurants serving Oltenian cuisine.
Practical note: on the Parâng ridge you have neither constant phone coverage nor water — start early, with layers and supplies, and if needed call Salvamont mountain rescue.
