The Transalpina (DN67C) is the highest road in Romania and, unlike its more famous rival, it does not hide in tight hairpins: it climbs long and wide, above the treeline, up to the bare crest of the Parâng, at roughly 2145 m at its highest point. Whole kilometres run along the ridgeline, the mountains falling away on both sides and shepherds' folds scattered across the high pastures — the rare sensation of driving not between mountains but over them.
It is best taken slowly, from Novaci toward Sebeș or the other way, with stops at Rânca and in the alpine passes. Autumn, when whole beech forests turn colour beneath the grey crest, is the most photogenic moment.
Good to know The road is seasonal and closes with the first serious snow; fog rises quickly in the afternoon, and there are no petrol stations on the alpine stretch. Check the mountain road conditions and the mountain weather before you leave.
