Munții Retezat
Munții Retezat
The land of 80-plus glacial lakes
The Retezat is the true wilderness of the Carpathians — a granite massif in the west of the country, scattered with dozens of glacial lakes and shielded from the crowds by its sheer remoteness. Here lies Bucura Lake, the largest glacial lake in Romania, and Retezat National Park, the country's first reserve of its kind, with a strictly protected core where entry is forbidden.
Why it's worth it The Retezat is the "land of lakes": glacial cirques carved into granite, rounded ridges and, below them, ancient forests barely touched. The landscape is wilder than in the Bucegi or Făgăraș — no cable car climbs it, and access is on foot alone. It is reserved for those seeking silence, chamois, and a night sky free of light pollution. Its high point is Peleaga Peak, rising above the plateau of lakes.
When to go Summer (roughly July–September) is the hiking season; the paths below the crest clear of snow late. Winter turns the massif into serious alpine terrain with no infrastructure — for experienced mountaineers only. Always check the forecast and note Salvamont; here you are far from roads and from any signal.
What to do The classic route climbs from Pietrele to Bucura Lake, the heart of the park, and from there the loop to the summit opens up, Bucura – Peleaga. The Pietrele and Buta cabanas are the departure bases from north and south. Discover every variant on the trails hub and the list of attractions, plus multi-day itineraries.
Getting there, where to stay Access is from Hațeg and the village of Nucșoara toward the Cârnic car park, then on foot; check the map and the roads page for the state of the forest tracks. In the foothills you'll find guesthouses and lodging around Hațeg – Râu de Mori, with meals at local restaurants. Inside the park, you sleep at the cabanas or, where permitted, in tents at Bucura.
Practical note: as a protected area, stick to the marked trails and the park's rules; carry supplies for the whole trip, since resupply inside is minimal.
