Retezat National Park is Romania's oldest protected area of its kind and, for many walkers, its wildest: a granite massif strung with glacial lakes gathered in cirques, jagged ridges and valleys where the phone signal dies at the first bend. It is not a drive-by destination — you walk in, with a tent or a hut booking, and you stay a few days.
The heart of the park is Bucura Lake, the largest glacial lake in the country, the starting point for the classic routes: Bucura–Peleaga up to Peleaga Peak, and the climb from Pietrele hut on Pietrele–Bucura Lake. The Gemenele scientific reserve is strictly controlled and not open to free visits.
