Bucura Lake is the largest glacial lake in Romania, set at roughly 2040 m in a vast cirque at the heart of the Retezat. There is no access road and no cable car: you get here on foot only, after hours of climbing, and that is part of the appeal. The shores are strewn with boulders polished by ice, the water mirrors the serrated crests all around, and on clear nights the cirque becomes one of the best places in the country for stargazing.
This is classic tent and multi-day territory. From the lake the routes head to Peleaga Peak along the Bucura – Peleaga link, while the classic approach comes from Pietrele Chalet on the Pietrele – Bucura Lake trail.
Good to know You are in the heart of Retezat National Park, so camping is allowed only in marked spots, fires are forbidden and rubbish comes back down with you.
