Valea Prahovei & Munții Bucegi

The Prahova Valley is Romania's classic gateway to the mountains — a corridor of handsome resorts, cabanas with a past, and cable cars that lift you in minutes from busy town streets to the high plateau of the Bucegi. Just ninety minutes from Bucharest, weekend hiking coexists with the elegant terraces of Sinaia, and the landscape shifts abruptly from spruce-clad slopes to the bare crags standing above the clouds.

Why it's worth it The Bucegi are the most-walked massif in the Carpathians, and deservedly so: a vast plateau scattered with famous formations such as Babele and the cross on Caraiman, reachable without being a climber. Down in the valley you'll find the regal architecture of Sinaia and the art nouveau lines of Bușteni, set at the foot of vertical walls. Most of the area falls within Bucegi Natural Park.

When to go Summer (June–September) opens the plateau for long hikes and the crossing to Omu Peak, the massif's highest point. Winter turns the slopes into ski domains, while the cable cars keep running for the views. In any season, weather on the ridge changes within minutes — check the mountain forecast before you set out and note the Salvamont rescue contacts.

What to do The signature routes start from below: the climb from Bușteni via the Jepi to Babele, the variant to the Caraiman Cross and the classic Babele – Omu link. Skiing In winter the domain is split between the pistes of Sinaia, Bușteni–Kalinderu and Azuga, each with its own character. Nearby Predeal rounds out the map for longer stays.

Practical note: there is no shelter across long stretches of the plateau — start early, pack windproof gear, and check the cable car's last run.
