Cabana Omu

Cabana Omu is the highest mountain shelter in the Bucegi Mountains, perched right on Omu Peak at roughly 2505 m, in the Prahova Valley – Bucegi area. It is a modest refuge, exposed to wind and frost, yet legendary among hikers as the most important trail junction on the Bucegi plateau.

Sitting on the main ridge, the chalet marks the meeting point of the paths climbing from the Prahova Valley, the Mălăiești Valley, the Cerbului Valley and across the plateau. Conditions are harsh all year: strong winds, frequent fog and low temperatures even in summer.

Getting there

• From Cabana Babele, across the plateau, following the red stripe (red stripe / red cross marking), about 2.5–3 hours of easy walking with a final climb — see the Babele – Omu trail.
• From Bușteni, via the Cerbului Valley, a sustained climb of about 5–6 hours.
• From the north, via the Mălăiești Valley, a more technical route with sections of easy scrambling.

What to do from here

• Reach Omu Peak, the highest point in the Bucegi.
• Descend toward Peștera and Omu Peak or toward Padina and the plateau.
• Set off on the northern ridge toward Mălăiești or Bucșoiu for more advanced hikes.

Tips

• The recommended season is June–September; in winter, access requires full alpine gear and experience.
• Sleeping capacity is limited — check availability in advance, especially on weekends.
• Check the weather before setting out; fog can hide the trail markings. Save the Mountain Rescue number.
