Omu Peak is the highest point of the Bucegi, at roughly 2514 m, and the place where the plateau ends abruptly: from here the mountain drops away in cliffs towards Malăiești, Cerbului and Morarului. On a clear day you can pick out the Făgăraș ridge on the horizon; in bad weather you cannot see the next waymarked post.
The easiest approach is across the plateau on Babele–Omu after the cable car — a long, almost level march, but completely exposed. The Ialomița-side option, Peștera–Omu Peak, climbs more steadily and sees fewer people. At the top, Omu hut operates only in the warm season.
Good to know Up here bad weather is the rule, not the exception: fog, wind and temperatures far below those in the valley, even in August. Do not set off without checking the mountain weather and without the mountain rescue number; in winter the route demands full kit and real experience.
