Brașov & Poiana Brașov

Brașov is the gateway to the Transylvanian mountains — a medieval town gathered beneath Tâmpa, with a Council Square full of terraces and a citadel visible from the first neighbourhood. Just a few kilometres away, Poiana Brașov changes the scene entirely: a high plateau, fir forests and Romania's best-known ski resort. You can tie the two together in a single stay, with the town as your base and the mountain twenty minutes away.

Why it's worth it Few places in the country give you, on the same day, a coffee in a restored historic centre and a run down a ski slope. Brașov is comfortable for families and for those who don't want "hardcore adventure", while Poiana has serious infrastructure: cable car, gondola and FIS-homologated slopes. It's a rare blend of urban culture and accessible mountain.

When to go Winter (December–March) is the headline season for skiing in Poiana Brașov, with the slopes at Predeal minutes away for variety. Summer turns the Postăvaru massif into generous terrain for hiking and mountain biking, and the town breathes more easily. Always check the forecast before heading up — weather on the ridge shifts fast, whatever the season.

What to do Climb Postăvarul Peak on foot or by the Poiana Brașov cable car for the panorama over the town and the Bucegi. Set aside a day for Bran Castle and, towards the Prahova Valley, for Peleș Castle and Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni. Explore the area's attractions and trails, then the options for experiences and themed itineraries.

Getting there Brașov sits on the A3/DN1, roughly 2–3 hours from Bucharest (approximate), with a major railway station and direct connections. From here, the mountain roads take you quickly into Poiana, towards Bran or up the Prahova Valley.
