Cabana Mălăiești

Cabana Mălăiești is a picturesque chalet set in the Mălăiești Valley, beneath the northern cliffs of the Bucegi Mountains, at roughly 1720 m, in the Prahova Valley – Bucegi area. Surrounded by impressive rock walls, it is a favourite base for hikers who prefer wilder, more technical routes than those on the plateau.

Its position at the foot of the Mălăiești glacial cirque makes it an ideal launch point toward Omu Peak on alpine variants, and also a quiet spot for those wanting to avoid the crowds in Bușteni.

Getting there

• From Râșnov / Glăjărie, on a forest road and then a woodland path (blue triangle marking), about 3–4 hours of gradual climbing.
• Variants from Diham and Pichetul Roșu, on marked paths, for longer outings.
• Car access ends at the foot of the valley; the final stretch must be done on foot.

What to do from here

• Climb toward Omu Peak through the Mălăiești cirque, a spectacular but demanding route.
• Explore the northern cliffs and the Mălăiești couloirs, recommended only for experienced hikers.
• Link across to Cabana Diham and the rest of the plateau.

Tips

• The safe season is June–September; in spring and autumn there can be ice patches and snow in the cirque.
• Alpine routes to Omu require experience and proper gear — do not attempt them in bad weather.
• As capacity is limited, check availability in advance. Check the weather and the Mountain Rescue number.
