Zănoaga Lake is the deepest glacial lake in Romania, hidden in a granite cirque in the Retezat at roughly 1997 m. Unlike Bucura, which is broad and bright, Zănoaga is shut in between walls, its water an almost black blue, its quiet rarely disturbed: the people who reach it are mostly those doing the long route, not a day trip.
It is usually taken in from the Bucura basin, combined with Bucura Lake and the climb on Bucura–Peleaga; from the south, the approach runs past Buta hut. Either way it is a full day on foot, not a stop along the way.
Good to know There is no shelter nearby and no reliable signal, and tents go only in the permitted zones of Retezat National Park.
