The Transfăgărășan (DN7C) cuts through the Făgăraș at roughly 2042 m, via the tunnel beneath Bâlea, and has fairly earned its reputation as the most photographed stretch of asphalt in Romania. The northern hairpins read best from above, from the lake shore, where the road looks like a ribbon dropped carelessly down the slope.
The alpine section opens only in the summer months, once snow clears the pass; the rest of the year you can drive as far as Bâlea Waterfall, and go higher only by cable car. At the top wait Bâlea Lake and the paths onto the ridge, Bâlea–Capra among them.
Good to know Do not treat it as a fast road: it is narrow, full of cyclists, coaches and sheep, and fog climbs out of the valley in minutes.
