The Bâlea cable car climbs from Bâlea Cascadă up into the glacial cirque, straight over the wall that the road negotiates in hairpins. It is the only way up to the lake during the months when the Transfăgărășan is closed over the ridge: in winter the cabin lifts you out of the forest and into the white bowl of the cirque, with Bâlea Lake frozen below. In summer it is more of a shortcut: ride up quickly, then set off on foot towards Bâlea–Capra or onto the main ridge. In winter the ride is compulsory and often busy — bring patience and warm layers, because it blows up there even when the valley is calm.
