Bâlea Lake is the top end of the Transfăgărășan and probably the most photographed alpine landscape in Romania: a glacial lake at roughly 2034 m, held in a scree-filled cirque with walls rising vertically all around and the road threading beneath them like a ribbon. The water changes colour hour by hour, from steel to turquoise, and fog can erase everything in minutes.
Anyone who walks past the car park finds a different place. The path to Capra Lake climbs to the saddle above and opens the view towards the southern slope of the Făgăraș, while the main ridge continues through Strunga Dracului towards Negoiu — serious terrain, for experienced hikers only. When the alpine road is shut, the way up is the cable car from Bâlea Cascadă.
Good to know The alpine section of the road opens only in the summer months; the rest of the year the lake stays reachable by cable. The weather turns brutally fast: sun, hail and wind in the same afternoon. Take a thermal layer and a shell even in August, check the mountain weather and the mountain rescue number, then explore the rest of the Făgăraș and Transfăgărășan region.
