Parângu Mare is the highest point of the Parâng Mountains, at roughly 2519 m, and one of the most generous viewpoints in the Southern Carpathians: on clear days you can pick out the crests of the Retezat, Șureanu and Făgăraș, while below you spreads an alpine tier scattered with glacial lakes and deep cirques.
Unlike the Făgăraș, the Parâng ridge is broader and less exposed, which makes it suitable for walkers with some experience but no technical ambitions. That does not make it gentle: the distances are long, water is scarce on the crest, and summer weather breaks quickly, with electrical storms that easily catch a group up high.
Good to know The easiest access is from Rânca, on the route to Parângu Mare, with a very early start and time in hand for the return. The good season runs from July into October; in winter this becomes serious alpine terrain. The drive to the trailhead is an attraction in itself — the Transalpina runs alongside — and in winter the Rânca slopes take over. Check the mountain weather and the mountain rescue details before you set off.
