Moldoveanu Peak is the highest point in Romania, roughly 2544 m of wind-worn rock in the heart of the Făgăraș. You cannot see it from the road and there is no cable car: you get there on foot only, after a long climb, which explains why the satisfaction is out of all proportion to the view itself — a view that on a clear day takes in half the Southern Carpathians anyway.
The most-walked route starts from the Podragu cirque: Podragu hut–Moldoveanu, with a night at Podragu hut. Those doing the full traverse pick it up mid-route along the Făgăraș ridge, near Negoiu.
Good to know The sensible season is summer and early autumn; otherwise snow lingers in the cirques and the route becomes a winter undertaking, with everything that implies.
