Capra Lake is the glacial lake below the Transfăgărășan that many people miss, because you cannot see it from the car. It lies at roughly 2230 m, in a cirque open to the south, its water almost black on cloudy days and a hard blue when the sun strikes directly. Unlike its more famous neighbour, the quiet here is real: twenty minutes on foot from the road and you are left with the wind, the scree and the flocks of sheep on the slope.
It is also the starting point of one of the finest alpine sections in the country, the Bâlea – Capra route, and a natural entry onto the Făgăraș Ridge for the experienced.
Good to know You can only get here while the Transfăgărășan is open, usually through the summer months and early autumn; the rest of the year the area stays under snow. Weather changes within minutes at this altitude, so check the mountain weather and the Salvamont rules, carry layers and start early, ahead of the afternoon storms.
