Cabana Suru

Cabana Suru is a mountain hut at roughly 1450 m, sitting at the western end of the Făgăraș ridge. For many hikers it is the classic starting (or finishing) point of the great traverse of the Făgăraș Mountains, one of the most spectacular ridge hikes in the Carpathians.

Set in a clearing at the edge of the forest, below the massif, the hut offers a welcome shelter before the long climb into the alpine zone. The atmosphere is simple and mountain-like, far from the crowded tourist spots.

Getting there

The most common access starts from the village of Sebeșu de Sus, in the Olt valley. From here you climb on the red stripe marking (the ridge route) or on connecting trails, with an indicative ascent of 3-4 hours through forest to the hut.

An alternative is to drive close to the trailhead and then walk up. The elevation gain is significant, so set off in the morning.

What you can do from here

From Suru the great Făgăraș Ridge unfolds, linking peak after peak toward the east. Nearby objectives:

  • Suru Peak, the first alpine landmark of the traverse
  • continuing along the ridge toward the saddles and central summits of the massif
  • connections with the Transfăgărășan area via the descent routes

Tips

The safe season is summer and early autumn; in winter the ridge becomes serious alpine terrain, only for the experienced. Check availability in advance, as the hut is small and sometimes has a variable schedule.

Start early, carry water and bad-weather gear — wind and fog change fast on the ridge. Check the weather and keep Salvamont mountain rescue at hand before leaving.
