Bukovina blends gentle mountains, vast forests and a living mountain culture. This weekend sets the dramatic crags of Rarău against the calm of the Vatra Dornei resort. It is a less crowded region than the Bucegi or Brașov, ideal when you want clean air without queues. Check the weather — rain can arrive suddenly in Bukovina — and read the Bukovina – Rarău zone page.
Ziua 1 — Rarău and Pietrele Doamnei
Drive up the spectacular Transrarău road, then walk the Rarău – Pietrele Doamnei route to the limestone towers that dominate the massif. Roughly 2–3 hours of easy walking from the chalet. The view from the top, over Bukovina's forests, is the reward. Sleep at the Rarău chalet or descend to the valley — see chalets and accommodation.
Ziua 2 — Vatra Dornei
Move to Vatra Dornei (roughly an hour by car), a spa resort with bracing air. In summer you stroll through the park and over the hills; in winter it is the Vatra Dornei ski domain. The local mineral waters and mofettes are a relaxing bonus — see also the thermal baths.
Tips
- The Transrarău is narrow in places; drive carefully and yield when meeting cars.
- Eat local: tochitură stew, trout and mountain cheeses.
- In autumn the forest colours are superb, but mornings are cold — take an extra layer.
- Staying in rural guesthouses is authentic and cheap — see guesthouses.
