The Turda Gorges are one of those reserves that feel far bigger than they are: vertical limestone walls pressed in on either side of a stream, a path fitted with footbridges and metal steps, and a persistent sense that the mountain split open exactly where it should have. They sit on the eastern edge of the Apuseni Mountains, near Turda, which makes them one of the most accessible spectacular walks in Transylvania.
The main route through the gorge asks for no particular fitness, but it does ask for care: the rock is polished by traffic, the bridges get slippery after rain, and at weekends the path carries walkers in both directions. You'll almost certainly spot climbers on the walls — this is a classic Romanian crag — and, with luck, raptors circling overhead. The flora is unusually rich, with species rare for this latitude.
Good to know Go in spring or autumn, early in the morning, when the light slants into the gorge. Wear shoes with real grip, carry water and an extra layer. Combine the visit with the Bears' Cave or Scărișoara Ice Cave, see the trails in the area and guesthouses nearby, and check the mountain weather before you go.
