Saint Ana Lake is Romania's only volcanic crater lake: an almost perfectly round mirror set in the crater of the Ciomatu massif at roughly 950 m, ringed on every side by beech forest that runs down to the shore. It has no springs and no streams feeding it — it lives on rain and snow alone, which gives the water a remarkably low mineral content and the place an air of being suspended outside time.
A few hundred metres away, in the twin crater, lies the Mohoș peat bog, a raised mire of carnivorous plants and dwarf birch, visitable only on boardwalk and with a guide. From the valley the finest approach is the marked path from Băile Tușnad, and the resort of Băile Tușnad remains the logical base for a day or two here.

Autumn is the peak moment, when the beeches in the crater run through every shade of yellow and red.
