Munții Cindrel: Păltiniș

Above Sibiu, at more than 1,400 metres, Păltiniș rests quietly among the firs as one of the oldest mountain resorts in Romania — founded by the Transylvanian Carpathian Society at the end of the 19th century, with timber villas, a high-altitude sanatorium, and that sharp resinous air the people of Sibiu have come to breathe for generations. It is a gentle gateway to the Cindrel Mountains: no dramatic vertical walls, but wide upland pastures, spruce forests and rounded ridges, easy to cross on foot.

Why it's worth it Păltiniș blends history with calm. The philosopher Constantin Noica lived here, and the nearby hermitage adds a note of quiet reflection. Beyond the resort opens the high Cindrel plateau, with pastures and hidden glacial lakes. And at its foot stretches Mărginimea Sibiului — the string of shepherding villages with their cheeses and Saxon houses that give the region its distinct character.

When to go Summer (June–September) is ideal for long ridge walks and for the cool days when Sibiu turns hot. In winter, Păltiniș becomes a ski area and a place for snowy strolls. Because weather at altitude changes fast, check the mountain forecast and note the Salvamont rescue contacts before you set out.

What to do The signature route climbs from the resort to the ridge: Păltiniș – Cindrel Peak, the highest point of the massif, with views towards the Făgăraș and Lotru ranges. Skiing In winter, the runs are concentrated in the Arena Platoș Păltiniș area, with slopes for beginners and intermediates and a family feel. For longer stays, the nearby Făgăraș range and Transfăgărășan round out the county's mountain map.

Getting there & where to sleep From Sibiu, a paved forest road climbs the roughly 30 kilometres up to the resort; check conditions on the mountain roads page and on the map. For your stay, choose between hotels and guesthouses, and at the table the Transylvanian cooking of local restaurants.

Practical note: in winter the road up to Păltiniș may require season tyres and chains — set off early and check that the slopes are open.
