Munții Gutâi: Cavnic, Șuior, Izvoare

The Gutâi Mountains are the volcanic spine that separates the land of Maramureș from the rest of the world — rounded crests, andesite rocks breaking out of the forests, and passes the road climbs in gentle switchbacks. They lack the alpine heights of the Rodnei, but they have something rarer: slopes close to the village, glades with springs, and a mild mountain zone made for unhurried weekends.

What it is and why it's worth it This is a mid-altitude mountain area with three landmarks for visitors: Cavnic and Șuior, two neat ski areas, and Izvoare, the glade-resort above Baia Mare, a starting point for the Gutâi ridge. The landscape alternates beech forests with volcanic formations such as the Cock's Crest (Creasta Cocoșului), and from up top the view opens over the Maramureș villages with their wooden gates. It's the accessible mountain of Maramureș, only a few kilometres from the city.

When to go Winter is peak season: the Cavnic ski area and the Șuior slopes offer family skiing, with good snow and short queues. Summer and autumn (June–October) open easy trails to Izvoare and the Cock's Crest, plus gentle hikes through the glades. What to do In winter, choose between Cavnic and Șuior; in summer, climb from Izvoare toward the ridge and the andesite volcanic formations.
