Straja, Muntele Mic & Semenic

In the south-west of the country, where the Jiu Valley meets the mountains of Banat, rises a trio of resorts less crowded than those in Prahova, yet blessed with generous snow and wide views: Straja, above Lupeni; Muntele Mic, above Caransebeș; and Semenic, the southernmost major ski area in Romania. This is mid-altitude mountain country, with open uplands, wooden churches, and a stillness you feel from the very first hairpin.

Why it's worth it Straja grew quickly into a family resort, with sunny slopes and a statue of Jesus watching over the ridge. Muntele Mic keeps the charm of its old chalets and the uplands of the Țarcu Mountains, while Semenic, at over 1,400 metres, is known for its abundant snow and the endless forests of montane Banat. Together they make a more peaceful alternative to the classic resorts.

When to go Winter (December–March) is the peak season, with snow that often lasts well into spring. Summer opens the uplands for long hikes and mountain biking. Weather on the ridge shifts fast — check the forecast and note the Salvamont rescue contacts before you set out.

Practical note: the roads up to the chalets are sometimes narrow with tight hairpins — in winter fit season tyres and carry chains.
