The most spectacular waterfalls in Romania

The most spectacular waterfalls in Romania

The most spectacular waterfalls in Romania do not look the same in every season, and that is the first lesson few guides tell you outright: a waterfall you see thundering in May can be a timid trickle in August. Flow depends on snowmelt and rain, so the timing of your visit matters as much as the location. Below you will find the country's most impressive waterfalls, with honest notes on access and season.

From the falls along the Transfăgărășan to the hidden cascades of Maramureș, the Carpathian landscape is full of such spectacles. I have chosen five that genuinely reward the trip and look their best at the right moment.

Bâlea Waterfall — on the Transfăgărășan

Bâlea Waterfall, in the Făgăraș–Transfăgărășan area, is the most accessible major fall in Făgăraș, visible right from the base of the cable car on the Transfăgărășan. The water drops from the cirque of Lake Bâlea (2034 m) over rock steps. It looks most spectacular in late spring and early summer, when snowmelt swells the flow.

Access: the road is open roughly from July to October; off-season you use the cable car. A short path climbs from the car park to the foot of the fall.

Urlătoarea Waterfall — Bucegi

Probably the best-known waterfall in the Prahova Valley and Bucegi, Urlătoarea sits above the town of Bușteni. The access trail is short and marked, suitable for families, though the final stretch is rocky. Flow peaks in spring; in summer it can drop noticeably. The name comes from the roar of the water.

Bigăr Waterfall — Caraș-Severin

Bigăr is the waterfall that went around the internet thanks to its veil-like shape over a moss-covered dome. It lies in Caraș-Severin, in the Nera Gorge, next to the national road, so it is easy to reach. Part of the formation collapsed in 2021, so its current look differs from old photos — manage your expectations.

Horses' Waterfall — Rodna Mountains

One of the tallest waterfalls in Romania, the Horses' Waterfall (Cascada Cailor) tumbles in steps inside a glacial cirque in the Rodna Mountains, near Borșa. You reach it on a marked path or, partly, by chairlift. It looks most impressive after snowmelt and after sustained rain.

Vânturătoarea Waterfall — Domogled-Cerna Valley

In the Domogled-Cerna Valley National Park, Vânturătoarea is a tall, slender fall hidden in the forest. Access requires a sustained climb of about an hour on a path. The wind stirred up by the water gave the fall its name. The best time to visit is late spring.

Practical tips

  • Visit in late spring for maximum flow; in summer many falls shrink.
  • The rocks near the water are slippery — wear footwear with good grip.
  • Check the weather and the state of the mountain roads beforehand.
  • Do not approach the lip dangerously and do not climb wet rocks.
  • Combine the visit with other sights nearby; see the mountain zones.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the most spectacular waterfall in Romania?

It depends on taste and season. Bâlea Waterfall impresses with its alpine setting and easy access, the Horses' Waterfall with its height, and Vânturătoarea with its elegance. The best one for you depends on how far you want to walk and the time of year.

Is Bigăr Waterfall still worth visiting?

Part of the tufa formation collapsed in 2021, so it no longer looks identical to the viral photos. It remains a pleasant, easily reachable spot in Caraș-Severin, but manage your expectations. Combine it with a walk in the Nera Gorge.

When do waterfalls have the highest flow?

Roughly, in late spring and early summer, when snow melts at altitude, plus after rain. A dry summer greatly reduces the flow of many falls. Check the local forecast before setting off.

Can I reach waterfalls with children?

Yes, some of them. Urlătoarea in Bucegi and Bâlea Waterfall have short trails suitable for families, though the final stretches can be rocky. The Horses' Waterfall and Vânturătoarea require more serious climbs. Match your choice to the children's age.

Do I need special gear?

Not technical gear, but footwear with good grip, since the rocks near the water are slippery. Bring spare clothes and water. For waterfalls in glacial cirques, treat the outing as a regular mountain hike.
