Maramureș blends the living tradition of mountain villages with the highest mountains in the north of the country, the Rodna. This three-day tour alternates serious hiking with cultural experiences and a little relaxation. It is a region with long drives between sights, so check the roads and the weather; read the Maramureș – Rodna page too.
Ziua 1 — Borșa and the Horses' Waterfall
Base yourself in Borșa and do an easy walk to the Horses' Waterfall, the highest waterfall in Romania, on the Horses' Waterfall route. Roughly 1–2 hours return from the chairlift. Spend the night in Borșa — see accommodation.
Ziua 2 — Pietrosul Rodnei
The big day: the climb up Pietrosul Rodnei, the massif's highest peak, through the reserve and past the glacial lakes. Roughly 7–9 hours return, a sustained climb. Return to your accommodation in Borșa.
Ziua 3 — The steam train and Prislop Pass
An easier day: a ride on the Mocănița steam train up the Vaser Valley, a narrow-gauge railway, followed by crossing the Prislop Pass toward Bukovina. Roughly, the Mocănița takes half a day. It is a relaxing cultural finale after the effort on Pietrosul.
Tips
- Mocănița tickets sell out in summer — book ahead.
- Pietrosul is a strictly protected habitat; stay on the trail.
- Road distances look small on the map, but the roads are slow — budget generously.
- Staying in traditional guesthouses is among the finest in the country — see guesthouses.
