Borșa – Vârful Pietrosul Rodnei

Hard5 h

The climb to Pietrosul Rodnei Peak (2303 m) from Borșa is the flagship route of the Eastern Carpathians: the highest summit of the entire range, reached by a long, sustained ascent from the Pietroasa district, past Iezer Lake and through the heart of the Pietrosul Mare reserve. It is a hard outing, alpine in its final section, reserved for fit, experienced hikers.

The figures are indicative: roughly 5 hours of ascent only, +~1200 m elevation gain, blue stripe waymark. Real time depends on pace, snow conditions high up and wind — on the alpine ridge the weather changes fast, so start early.

On the trail

You set off from Borșa, in the Pietroasa district (~700–800 m), following the blue stripe waymark north along the Pietroasa valley.

  1. Start (Pietroasa district). Pick up the blue stripe at the edge of the district. A forest road and path through spruce forest, with a steady climb beside the Pietroasa stream — running water is usually available here, but treat it before drinking.
  2. Leaving the forest. After a few hours the terrain opens to the alpine zone; forest gives way to dwarf pine and meadows. This is usually where you feel the first cold wind and the change of microclimate.
  3. Iezer Lake (~1825 m). A superb glacial lake below the peak, a key orientation point and a good rest spot. The area is part of the Pietrosul Mare reserve — stay on the path and do not camp without authorization.
  4. Iezer refuge. Near the lake there is usually a simple refuge, useful as shelter in bad weather; check its condition locally and do not rely on it alone.
  5. Final push to the summit. From the lake you climb the steep, rocky slope on the blue stripe, through open alpine terrain. The last section is wind-exposed and can hold snow well into summer.
  6. Pietrosul Rodnei Peak (2303 m). A vast panorama across the whole Rodnei ridge, toward Maramureș and, on a clear day, toward the Maramureș Mountains.

From here you can link the hike with other sights: Pietrosul Rodnei Peak, a descent toward Horses' Waterfall or other trails in the Maramureș–Rodnei region.

Equipment and difficulty

Difficulty hard: +~1200 m, long duration and an exposed alpine finish. Requires good fitness and mountain experience.

  • Sturdy mountain boots with an aggressive sole (rocky terrain, possible snow up high).
  • Thermal layer plus hardshell and gloves — the summit is cold and windy even in summer.
  • Water (at least 2 l) and snacks; trailside sources are not safe without treatment.
  • Map / GPS, sunglasses, UV protection; a headlamp if you start very early.

Details in the equipment guide.

Safety

In good weather it is a stunning outing, but long and exposed. Hazards grow with altitude:

  • Fog — on the open alpine zone you lose your bearings quickly; follow the blue stripe and carry navigation tools.
  • Wind and cold — the Rodnei ridge is highly exposed; strong wind and hypothermia are real risks even in summer.
  • Snow and ice — may persist high up late in the season, making the final slope dangerous.
  • Lightning — the summit is very exposed; in a storm do not climb and retreat at once.

Retreat option: the Iezer Lake / refuge area is the best landmark from which to abandon the summit push if the weather turns. Turn back in good time; do not climb the final slope in thick fog or on ice. Check the weather and the safety guide.

Emergencies: 112 (Mountain Rescue / Salvamont).
