Băile Herculane is Romania's most theatrical thermal resort and, at the same time, its most melancholy: along the main street, Austrian hotels with neo-baroque façades stand derelict beside springs that still push out hot, sulphurous water, exactly as they did for the Roman legions who came here to Ad Aquas Herculi Sacras. First-time visitors leave with the impression of an abandoned film set — and they are not entirely wrong.
Beneath that crust the resort works: treatment centres, renovated hotels and, above all, the Cerna Valley — a tight, wild defile of gorges, caves and paths climbing towards Domogled.
Good to know Spring or autumn is the best time, warm enough for the springs and cool enough for walking. It combines well with the Straja, Muntele Mic & Semenic region and, in winter, with the pistes at Semenic or Muntele Mic.
