Geoagiu-Băi is one of the oldest thermal resorts in the country — the Romans called it Germisara and cut their pools straight into the rock, and the traces are still there beside the springs. The water comes out of the ground warm all year, which makes the small plateau above the Mureș Valley an unexpectedly pleasant place to winter, steam lifting off the pools on frosty mornings.
The resort is small, quiet and ringed by forest, with the Clocota waterfall a few steps from the centre. Its position recommends it as a base for south-western Transylvania: from here you reach the Apuseni without a long drive and, southwards, the Retezat Mountains and the gateway to Retezat National Park.
Good to know This is a destination for treatment and slowing down, not for nightlife; the pace is unhurried and that is the whole charm. Compare it with the other thermal spas in the Carpathians, book stays early for long weekends, and see which experiences are worth stringing into a few days.
