Parcul Național Buila–Vânturarița

Buila–Vânturarița National Park is Romania's smallest national park and probably its most underrated. It protects a slender limestone ridge that stands like a wall above the forests of northern Vâlcea, with white cliffs, narrow ledges and a big-mountain feel compressed into a surprisingly small area. First-time visitors tend to leave puzzled that the place isn't better known.

What makes it distinctive is the mix of nature and history: hermitages and old monasteries are strung along the foot of the ridge, tucked into beech woods, while the limestone itself opens into caves and resurgent springs. The trails climb steeply out of the valleys, gaining serious height over short distances, but the views from the crest — towards the Căpățânii, the Lotru and, in clear weather, the Făgăraș — repay the effort.

Good to know The good season runs from May to October; in winter the ridges turn technical. There is no water on the crest, so start with a full supply. The logical base is Băile Olănești, a few kilometres away, and Peștera Muierilor and the Transalpina fit neatly into the same loop.
