The Borșa gondola is the easiest way to reach the edge of the Rodna Mountains: enclosed cabins glide up over spruce forest while the roofs of Borșa and the valley narrowing towards Prislop fall away below. With a 4.7 Google rating from over 1095 reviews, it is one of the best-rated lifts in the northern Carpathians — loved in summer for the view and in winter as the gateway to the Borșa ski slopes.

At the top the panorama that justifies the drive to Maramureș opens up: the ridge of Rodna Mountains National Park, bare crests and glacial cirques, and on clear days the far-off outlines of the Maramureș Mountains. Two of the finest walks in the area also start from Borșa: the Horses' Waterfall on its marked path, and the long climb towards the highest summit of the Eastern Carpathians.

Good to know Operating hours shift between seasons and the lift stops in strong wind or thick fog — ask at the ticket office before planning a whole day around it. The top is noticeably colder and windier than the valley, so take a jacket even in July. Check the mountain weather and explore the rest of the Maramureș and Rodnei region, from the Vaser steam train to the wooden churches.
