Rodna Mountains National Park covers the most massive ridge of the Eastern Carpathians — a long, almost unbroken crest with glacial cirques on the northern flank, small lakes hidden beneath the cliffs and alpine grassland running as far as you can see. Here stands Pietrosul Rodnei, the highest point of the Eastern Carpathians, and the park's core is a biosphere reserve, with dwarf pine, reintroduced chamois and marmots.
The most direct way to the ridge leaves from Borșa on the Pietrosu trail, a sustained climb that breaks above the forest at Iezer lake. For an easier day, the Horses' Waterfall is a short walk from the top station of the Borșa gondola, and the rest of the Maramureș and Rodnei region adds the Vaser steam train and villages with carved wooden gates.
Good to know The ridge is beautiful but exposed: no shelter, no water over long stretches, and fog that settles fast in summer. Start early, carry a map and rain gear, and respect park rules — camping is allowed only at designated spots. Check the mountain weather and keep the mountain rescue number handy before you climb.
