Piatra Craiului is a long, sharp limestone ridge, one of the most beautiful in the Carpathians. The slope facing Zărnești is accessible and rewarding, perfect for a weekend with one easy day and one serious one. Note: the ridge itself is technical and exposed — it is not for beginners. Check the weather and read the Piatra Craiului zone page.
Ziua 1 — Zărnești and Curmătura Chalet
Set out from Zărnești on the route to Curmătura Chalet, a gentle climb through forest to the saddle from which you admire the ridge. Roughly 2–3 hours. Spend the night at the chalet, in the heart of the reserve — see chalets. In the evening, with luck, you will see chamois on the rocks.
Ziua 2 — The Piatra Craiului ridge
With experience and good weather, tackle a section of the Piatra Craiului ridge, with cabled passages and exposure. Roughly, the full ridge takes 8–10 hours and is only for the fit. For everyone else, a gentler walk through the Zărnești Gorges is a superb alternative. The descent to Zărnești ends the day.
Tips
- The ridge has no water — carry everything you need from the chalet.
- Climb the cables only on dry rock; in rain the limestone becomes dangerous.
- The area is bear habitat — manage your food carefully, especially at the chalet.
- For accommodation and meals in Zărnești, see guesthouses and stays.
