Zărnești – Cabana Curmătura

Easy2 h5 km

The walk from Zărnești up to Cabana Curmătura is the classic gateway into Piatra Craiului National Park: an easy trail, ideal for families and beginners, climbing gently through forest to the Curmătura saddle. It is the natural springboard for the ridge and a great day hike in its own right, with limestone scenery and a welcoming mountain hut at the top.

The figures below are rough estimates: about 2 hours uphill, ~5 km and roughly +500 m of elevation gain. Your pace, breaks and the state of the path can shift these numbers noticeably — treat them as guidance, not guarantees.

On the trail

You start in Zărnești, at Fântâna lui Botorog (Botorog's Spring), the trailhead where you will usually find the last reliable water before the climb. From here follow the blue triangle waymark.

  1. Start (Botorog's Spring). Take the forest road, then the path that enters the woods at the foot of the limestone slopes. The climb is steady but has no hard sections.
  2. Through the forest. The path winds beneath beech and spruce, with occasional natural steps of roots and rock. After rain the ground can be slippery.
  3. Toward the saddle. The forest gradually thins and the first views of the massif's limestone walls open up. The gradient stays moderate.
  4. Curmătura (the saddle). You reach the broad saddle where Cabana Curmătura sits — a good rest stop, usually serving hot food, with views toward the ridge. Check hut opening hours locally.

Several routes branch from Curmătura: toward the limestone ridge (note: the Piatra Craiului ridge crossing itself is a separate, hard route) or back down the valley via the Zărnești Gorges.

Gear and difficulty

Difficulty is easy, but it is still a real mountain outing.

  • Hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip — there are rocks and roots underfoot.
  • Enough water (1.5–2 l); refill at Botorog's Spring before you start, and do not count on springs along the way.
  • A warm layer and a rain shell — mountain weather changes fast.
  • A snack, and a headlamp if you set off late.

See the gear guide and the guesthouses hub in Zărnești for accommodation.

Safety

The trail is accessible, but a few things deserve attention.

  • Weather — even on an easy path, fog or rain changes everything. Check the weather before you leave.
  • Slippery ground — wet roots and limestone get slick; step carefully on the descent.
  • Wildlife — you are in a national park, in bear country. Never leave food in sight, keep noise moderate and never approach animals.
  • Start time — set off early enough to be back down in daylight.

When to turn back: if the weather deteriorates suddenly or you feel tired, returning by the same trail is simple and safe. Also read the safety and weather guide.
