Munții Piatra Craiului (Zărnești)

A spectacular limestone ridge, above Zărnești

Region: Carpații MeridionaliAltitude: 800–2238 mSeasons: 3/4

Piatra Craiului is the slenderest limestone ridge in the Carpathians — a long blade of white stone rising above Zărnești like a wall that divides the world. Narrow, sharp and exposed, its silhouette commands the whole Bran region and remains, for many mountaineers, the most beautiful ridge in the country.

Why it's worth it Unlike the broad plateaus of the Bucegi, Piatra Craiului is a single thin line: in places the path runs right along the edge, with drops on either side. Its high point is La Om Peak, and the entire massif is protected by Piatra Craiului National Park, home to chamois and to rare endemic flora. At its foot, the Zărnești Gorges open a narrow canyon, shaded and cool even at the height of summer.

When to go Summer (roughly June–September) is the season for the ridge; the full traverse demands a long day and a clear head for exposure. Spring and autumn are ideal for the gorges and the meadows below the wall. In winter the ridge becomes serious alpine terrain. Always check the forecast and note Salvamont — on the crest there is no quick way out.

What to do The star route is the Piatra Craiului ridge traverse, an airy crossing with cable-secured passages. For a gentler day, walk through the Zărnești Gorges or climb from Zărnești to Curmătura cabana, the classic balcony facing the wall. The Curmătura cabana is the natural departure base. See it all on the trails hub, the list of attractions and experiences in the area.

Getting there, where to stay The gateway is Zărnești, easily reached from Brașov and Bran; check the map and the roads page. Lodging is plentiful in the foothills — guesthouses in Zărnești, Măgura and Peștera, lodging around Bran, and meals at restaurants serving traditional cuisine. The hillside village of Măgura offers the finest views toward the ridge.

Practical note: on the crest there are few water sources and exposed passages — start early, carry enough water, and avoid the ridge in wind or rain.
