Piatra Craiului National Park protects the slenderest limestone ridge in the Carpathians: a long, narrow, white blade of rock that rises abruptly above the forests around Zărnești and is visible from dozens of kilometres away. It is not a large massif, but it is one of Romania's most serious — the flanks fall away steeply and the ridge routes demand a sure foot and settled weather.
The park is also a reservoir of biodiversity: chamois on the ledges, bears in the forests below, and rare endemic flora — the Piatra Craiului pink grows nowhere else. For the ordinary visitor the charm lies in the contrast between the gentle meadows at the foot and the wall of limestone above, in view from almost anywhere.
Good to know Start gently, with the Zărnești Gorges or the climb up to Curmătura Chalet on the trail from Zărnești. Only with experience and proper kit should you take on the ridge traverse and La Om Peak — there is no water up there, and summer storms build fast. Check the mountain weather and keep the mountain rescue details to hand.
