Lacu Roșu formed naturally, when a slope collapsed and dammed the valley, and the evidence still stands in the water: petrified fir trunks rise out of the surface like masts. It sits at roughly 980 m, in a wooded hollow at the mouth of the Bicaz Gorges, and it is one of the few places where a dramatic landscape comes without effort — you drive to it, and the circuit of the lake is a short walk on a made path.
It works well as a base for a full day: the Bicaz Gorges begin just downstream, the Ceahlău massif is a stone's throw away with the classic Durău–Toaca ascent, and southwards you reach Saint Anne's Lake.
