Durău – Vârful Toaca

Moderate3.5 h

The route from Durău to Toaca Peak (1904 m) is one of the finest hikes in the Ceahlău massif: a sustained climb from the Durău resort onto the alpine plateau, finishing on the metal stairways that lead to the second-highest summit of the range. It is a moderate trail, but long and with serious elevation gain — a proper full-day outing.

Figures are approximate: roughly 3.5 hours for the ascent alone, +~900 m of climbing, waymarked with a red stripe. Real time depends on your pace, on snow on the stairs and on the weather — in fog and wind, plan for more and start early.

On the trail

You set off from Durău (~800 m), at the edge of the resort, following the red stripe marking towards the ridge. The first section is through forest, then the terrain opens onto the plateau.

  1. Start (Durău). Pick up the red stripe at the edge of the resort. A steady climb through spruce forest, shady and root-laced — a good warm-up rhythm.
  2. Leaving the forest. The slope steepens and the forest thins; the first views open back over Durău and the Bistrița valley. Usually this is where you feel the change of microclimate — stronger wind.
  3. The Ceahlău plateau. Once on the plateau the landscape opens wide across the alpine meadows. To the right you can spot the Panaghia rock and the massif's characteristic formations.
  4. Cabana Dochia. A key orientation and rest point (~1750 m). It usually offers shelter and a place to pause before the final push; check opening hours locally.
  5. The metal stairways to Toaca. From Dochia you climb to Toaca Peak on a series of metal staircases fixed to the steep slope. In wind or ice they are exposed — take care with your footing and balance.
  6. Toaca Peak (1904 m). A wide panorama over the whole Ceahlău massif, the plateau and the surrounding valleys, with the weather station nearby.

From the plateau you can explore other routes to Toaca Peak or descend towards Izvoru Muntelui. The area lies within Ceahlău National Park, and the wider region of Ceahlău–Bicaz.

Equipment and difficulty

Difficulty is moderate, but with +~900 m and an exposed finish on the stairs — it demands decent fitness.

  • Mountain boots with good grip (the stairs can be slippery when wet or icy).
  • Thermal layer and a hardshell — the plateau is cold and windy even in summer.
  • Water (2 l), snacks; do not count on reliable water sources along the way.
  • Map / GPS for fog, sunglasses and UV protection.

See the equipment guide for details.

Safety

In good weather the trail is accessible but long. The hazards grow with altitude and weather:

  • Fog — on the open plateau you lose your bearings fast; follow the red stripe and carry navigation tools.
  • The metal stairs — exposed in wind and dangerous with ice or snow; in winter or early spring they can be impassable.
  • Lightning — the high plateau is very exposed; in a storm do not climb and retreat at once.

Retreat option: Cabana Dochia is the best shelter landmark and the point from which you can abandon the push to Toaca if the weather turns. Turn back in good time; do not climb the stairs in thick fog or on ice. Check the weather and the safety guide.
