Vârful Toaca

Toaca Peak is the silhouette that defines the Ceahlău: an almost perfect pyramid at roughly 1904 m, with the weather station on top and a final stretch climbed on a long wooden staircase bolted straight into the rock. The effort is repaid abruptly — from the summit you see the whole massif, Izvorul Muntelui reservoir in the valley, and on very clear days, eastward, the Moldavian plain stretching to the horizon. At sunrise, when fog fills the valleys and only the crests break the surface, it is one of the most spectacular views in the Eastern Carpathians.

The classic ascent starts from Durău on the Durău – Toaca trail, with a longer variant from Izvoru Muntelui to Dochia Chalet.

Good to know You are inside Ceahlău National Park, so marked paths are not to be left. Wind on the ridge is strong even in summer, and the stairs turn slippery when damp; start early, carry layers and water. Check the mountain weather and the Salvamont advice. You can overnight at Dochia Chalet for the sunrise, and the rest of the Ceahlău & Bicaz region rounds out the weekend.
