Bran – Moeciu – Rucăr – Fundata

Mountain villages and rural tourism, below Piatra Craiului

Region: Carpații MeridionaliAltitude: 700–1400 mSeasons: 4/4

The Rucăr–Bran corridor is the most photogenic rural road in the Carpathians: tilted meadows, wooden barns, grazing flocks and, above it all, the sheer silhouette of Piatra Craiului. From Bran, with its castle on the rock, you climb through Moeciu and Fundata towards the pass that links Transylvania to Wallachia. This is a region of authentic villages, where agritourism is truly at home and the mountain begins right in the guesthouse yard.

Why it's worth it You don't come here for resorts but for quiet, peasant gastronomy and views that change at every bend. Fundata is among the highest inhabited settlements in the country (roughly around 1,300 m), and the air, the cheeses and the home-baked bread make the difference. It's the ideal base for hikes in Piatra Craiului.

When to go Summer and early autumn are perfect for trails and for the scenic drive; the colours of September–October are spectacular. Winter brings generous snow and storybook villages, but the roads demand caution — check the forecast and the state of the mountain roads before setting off.

What to do Visit Bran Castle, then step onto the mountain at the Zărnești Gorges, a narrow, cool canyon that is a classic gateway to Piatra Craiului National Park and to La Om Peak, the highest point of the ridge. Browse the area's trails and attractions, then ideas for experiences and itineraries on horseback, around cheese or photography.

Getting there From Brașov, the DN73 reaches Bran in about 40 minutes (approximate), and from there the road climbs towards Moeciu and Fundata. In summer, the corridor can be continued towards Câmpulung on one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the country.

Where to sleep & eat The offer is dominated by family-run guesthouses with breakfast from their own produce; see all accommodation options and the restaurants serving traditional cuisine.

Practical note: on the Piatra Craiului trails wear proper gear and start early; if needed, Salvamont mountain rescue is one phone call away.
