Airport transfer to the mountain resorts

You've landed and a single step separates you from the mountain: the transfer from the airport to the resort. It's the moment where many improvise and lose time or money. Here's how to choose the arrival airport correctly and reach your accommodation stress-free.

Choose the airport by destination Don't always fly to Bucharest out of reflex. The right airport depends on your area: - Bucharest–Otopeni (OTP) — the best internationally connected, the classic gateway to Prahova Valley and Bucegi and the Brașov area. - Sibiu (SBZ) — ideal for Făgăraș and the Transfăgărășan, Păltiniș and the Transalpina. - Cluj (CLJ) — the best gateway to the Apuseni, Arieșeni–Vârtop and the north-west. - Târgu Mureș (TGM) — useful for the centre of the country and access to the nearby mountain areas. - Bacău (BCM) — the gateway to the east and, further on, to Bucovina and Rarău.

Editor's tip: sometimes a flight to a smaller airport closer to the resort saves you hours on the road. Compare the total transfer, not just the plane ticket.

The four transfer options 1. Private transfer (door-to-door) — the most comfortable, especially with luggage, children or a group. Book it ahead, not on arrival. 2. Mountain taxi / ride-hailing — quick for short distances; on long ones, agree the price first. 3. Train + short transfer — excellent on routes with a station in the resort; it combines saving with comfort. 4. Rent-a-car — the best if you want to explore freely or tackle the alpine roads; see our rental guide.

For transfers and tours with transport included, check the experiences section.

How to book the transfer, step by step 1. Fix the accommodation first — a guesthouse or a hotel — so you know the exact address. 2. Give the flight number to the private transfer, so the driver can track delays. 3. Confirm how many seats and how much luggage space you need, especially with skis or gear. 4. Set the meeting point at the airport and a backup contact plan. 5. Agree the total price in advance, to avoid surprises.

Arriving in the evening or in winter? Plan extra Evening flights and winter conditions demand a safety margin: - Check the check-in time at your accommodation if you arrive late. - In winter, the mountain road can be slower — check the weather and the state of the roads. - Have an alternative if a pass is closed; some alpine sections aren't open all year. - Save the contacts of the driver and, for any outing on the mountain, Salvamont 0725 826 668 and 112.

Transfer checklist - The airport chosen for the destination area, not by reflex. - Accommodation booked, with an exact address. - A transfer chosen and booked ahead, with an agreed price. - The flight number given; a clear meeting point. - [Weather](/en/vremea) and roads checked, especially in winter. - Route ideas in itineraries; meals in restaurants.

Frequently asked questions

Which airport is best for the mountains? It depends on the area: Otopeni for Prahova and Brașov, Sibiu for Făgăraș and Transalpina, Cluj for Apuseni, Bacău for Bucovina. Compare the total transfer, not just the ticket.

Is the train or a private transfer cheaper? As a rough guide, train plus a short transfer is more economical, while a private transfer is more comfortable door-to-door. Choose by luggage, group and arrival time. Check the price with the operator.

Can I book the transfer on arrival? You can, but you risk waiting or paying more. We recommend booking ahead, especially in the evening, in winter or on busy weekends.

How do I get there in winter if the road is hard? Check the weather and the state of the roads beforehand, choose a transfer with mountain experience, and keep an alternative if a high pass is closed.
