Top hiking trails in Romania

The best hiking trails in Romania are not a single famous ridge but a whole range of routes, from easy walks on marked paths to alpine traverses that demand two or three full days on foot. The routes below were chosen after years of walking these mountains and talking to people who climb regularly, not by counting how many photos they post.

Before any list, one warning that is not a cliché: on the high ridge the weather flips in under an hour, and afternoon thunderstorms in July and August are the rule, not the exception. Check the weather the evening before and leave early. Below you will find trails grouped by difficulty, with concrete notes on terrain, duration and what to expect.

Ridge trails for fit hikers

These routes demand real fitness, navigation skills and proper gear. They are not beginner trails, but they are the ones you remember.

The Făgăraș Ridge — the full traverse

The backbone of the Southern Carpathians. The Făgăraș Ridge is classically walked in 4-7 days, from Plaiul Foii or from Turnu Roșu, crossing Moldoveanu Peak (2544 m) and Negoiu Peak (2535 m), the two highest summits in the country. Sections such as Strunga Dracului require focus and free hands. For detailed preparation read the traverse guide.

Difficulty: high. Sleep in refuges and chalets; water is scarce on the ridge, so plan your sources ahead. Recommended season: July–September, once the snow on the northern slopes has melted.

Bucura–Peleaga in Retezat

The Bucura–Peleaga trail climbs from the country's largest glacial lake, Lake Bucura (2040 m), toward Peleaga Peak (2509 m), the high point of Retezat. Scree terrain near the top, but no technical passages. The view over the lake-filled cirques is worth every step. See also the Retezat guide.

Big-impact day hikes

You do not need a free week to reach a ridge. These trails fit into one day, but still demand respect.

The Piatra Craiului Ridge

The Piatra Craiului Ridge is a limestone blade nearly 25 km long. The full northern variant needs cables and a cool head at altitude, but the short sections from Zărnești toward La Om peak (2238 m) are manageable for hikers of medium experience. Mind the water: there are no sources on the ridge.

Babele – Omu Peak in Bucegi

The Babele–Omu trail starts comfortably near the cable-car station and reaches Omu Peak (2514 m), the highest point in Bucegi. Flat at the start, with a sustained climb toward the end. Ideal for a first day on a high plateau.

Accessible trails for families and beginners

Not all mountains mean extreme effort. Here are a few friendly routes.

How to pick the right trail

  1. Assess your fitness and navigation experience honestly.
  2. Check duration and elevation gain, not just distance in kilometres.
  3. Read the forecast for the ridge, not for the city — see the weather.
  4. Prepare basic gear; read the gear guide.
  5. Tell someone your route and expected return time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the hardest hiking trail in Romania?

The full traverse of the Făgăraș Ridge is considered the most demanding classic route, through its duration, exposure and cabled passages such as Strunga Dracului. It requires experience, gear and 4-7 days. It is not recommended as a first ridge trail.

Can I do the Piatra Craiului Ridge without experience?

The full northern variant is not for beginners because of the cabled sections and exposure. The short stretches from Zărnești, however, are feasible for hikers with medium fitness. Go with someone experienced the first time.

When is the best season for ridge trails?

The July–September window offers the most stable conditions, with snow melted on the northern slopes. In June there may still be snow patches, and from October the cold returns. Always check the forecast, roughly, before leaving.

Are there trails suitable for children?

Yes. The walk around Lake Bâlea, Bicaz Gorge along the valley floor and the developed Seven Ladders canyon are good options. Set the pace to the youngest member of the group and bring a change of clothes.

Do I need a mountain guide?

For marked day hikes, usually not, if you navigate well. For long ridge traverses or outings in uncertain weather, a guide or an experienced partner significantly increases your safety margin.
